The chart below compares the academic expectations of various post-high school opportunities available to graduates. It is intended only as a general guide. Colleges expect a student to program at least four core academic subjects into each year. Those college preparatory subjects are: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages. Highly selective institutions require greater numbers of these core academics.
Counselors act as a resource but many specific questions are better directed to the college or university admissions staff. Final decisions are always up to the colleges. They are usually based on the number of academic courses and the grade point average in those courses, as well as the student's scores on standardized admissions tests (ACT, SAT).
Requirements for admission to individual colleges and universities vary. Students who cannot maintain a "C" grade average (2.0) in high school may have some difficulty qualifying for college entrance. Some colleges may admit students with lower grade point averages, but who score well on entrance exams.

Grade Reporting
Student grades are reported by semesters. Each semester is made up of 18 weeks. Parents are informed of their student’s progress at 6- and 12-week intervals. The 6- and 12-week in-progress grades may include special comments from the teacher. Parents of students having difficulty or doing unsatisfactory work are urged to meet with teachers and/or the student’s counselor to discuss improvement options. Specific dates of all student reports are in each school’s Calendar/Handbook. Additionally, all parents may view the status of their students in classes in which the teacher is using the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
Freshman LIFT
Schaumburg High School’s LIFT Program is a student mentorship program aimed at easing the transition to high school. Mentors are junior and senior students who have been selected based on their leadership qualities. Student mentors and visitors to the program conduct lessons a couple days a week for our freshman students during the first half of their lunch period. These lessons are focused on providing students with resources for a successful student career and helping students establish a sense of belonging at Schaumburg High School. LIFT Teachers also check academic progress and referring students to tutorial supports.
Student Services Office
Students work with their counselor to develop a personal academic plan based on their interests and goals. The counselor can also recommend other academic supports as needed. Administrators, counselors, psychologists, social workers, and support staff work hand-in-hand to personalize a student's academic supports. Students may be referred to the Calming Space or Transition Room
Student Support Team (SST)
Each SST consists of an administrator, counselors, and psychologist/social worker, which provides one point for parents and students to access support services. This team format provides an opportunity for staff to collaborate and to address attendance, behavior, and academic issues quickly and efficiently.
